![]() ![]() John Mellencamp: American Paintings and Assemblages Coffee Table Art Book of Mellencamp’s work will be released October 18 th via Rizzoli New York. Like his music, Mellencamp’s paintings are carefully composed through the structural requirements of harmony, rhythm and order, and is thematically in line with the small-town, earnest voice of the heartland. His large-scale oil portraits and mixed-media pieces document America’s heart and soul, revealing unsettling but beautiful truths with a kind of anti-establishment frown, with a rich sense of narrative. His kinship with the German Expressionism of the early Twentieth Century, with its existential focus on the human condition, serves as the foundation for the development of Mellencamp’s “oeuvre”. ZonaĪs his musical career flourished, Mellencamp began to paint earnestly in 1980 with an early affinity for portraiture influenced by the works of Otto Dix and Max Beckmann. His is not a work that dabbles along the edges it is every bit as strong-willed as the best of the American expressionists no matter the period with which we might make a comparison.” – Dr. “The art of John Mellencamp stretches the American brand of expressionism…free in spirit, his work punches out at us. Tuija Seipell.JOHN MELLENCAMP EXHIBIT: John Mellencamp Painting and Assemblages November 26, 2022-February 12, 2023 The studio not only looks like his art, it looks like a space where he and his art belong. Mirrors, dark distressed wood, cast iron, old doors and door frames are scattered in the studio which does, indeed, also function as Mellencamp’s painting studio. The studio is a reflection of Mellencamp’s artistic style and it is also a perfect space to display his own art and many pieces from his vast collections of stuff including motorcycles, dolls and furnishings. The masculine, eclectic and dark-toned industrial loft-syle space is proof that the two speak the same visual language fluently. Goff, who has designed most of the musician’s homes, has been friends with Mellencamp since 1977 and often travels with him. Now, with his frend and go-to designer, Trevor Goff, Mellencamp has completed the design of his studio, located in Soho, New York, close to Meg Ryan’s Tribeca home. Apparently he never throws anything away. #JOHN MELLENCAMP PAINTINGS FULL#He has six warehouses in Bloomington, Indiana, full of furniture, antiques and various other collections. But few know that he still lives in Seymour, Indiana, where he was born, although he has several homes elsewhere as well.Īnd even fewer know that Mellencamp is a hoarder. Some also know him for his engagement in 2018 to actress Meg Ryan. His dramatic, moody and dark style of portraits and mixed-media works is a commentary on American life in what he calls an anti-establishment frown. He is also a prolific painter who has exhibited across the U.S. He has recorded 24 albums, including American Fool released in 1982 under his stage name, John Cougar. As singer, songwriter, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Grammy winner John Mellencamp is well known for his music. ![]()
